The Leonardo DRS Land Systems business is a recognized leader in the design and integration of complex technologies into new and legacy systems and platforms for global military and commercial customers.
Leonardo DRS is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer with subject matter expertise and strong leadership abilities to successfully execute verification testing activities and standardize Verification & Validation (V&V) processes and practices across the Land Systems’ business. The candidate must have expertise in the design, development, analysis, documentation, support, and standardization and continuous improvement of verification testing of complex products, systems or subsystems, and associated V&V processes and practices. This expertise must include environmental and EMI/EMC testing. Additionally, the candidate must have the ability to determine how to create a process that would best verify or validate a product in order to assure that the product meets applicable requirements and specifications.
The position responsibilities include assigning tasks to V&V personnel and teams, setting long and short-term project goals, negotiating with vendors and clients, ensuring that V&V activities stay within time and budgetary constraints, and preparing status reports for the engineering leadership. The ideal candidate must have kept abreast of cutting-edge advancements in the field of testing of complex systems and V&V processes, and be dedicated to execution excellence.
Lead the tailoring and execution of verification activities across the business
Lead the standardization of verification and validation processes and practices across the business
Use DOORS to create, review, status, determine verification of, and track verification evidence of compliance to requirements.
Write/review V&V plans, detailed test procedures
Take lead role in program milestone reviews: SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR, TRR, PRR, etc.
Perform verification of compliance matrices, traceability matrices
Review/author RFPs/SOWs and system specs and recognize significant cost drivers and verification risks.
Provide inputs into verification methods and details in requirements.
Write RFPs/SOWs for testing subcontractors, including government facilities.
Manage subcontractors and flow down of requirements, especially test philosophy that balances risk for system level qualification. I.e., “How much testing is enough?”
Perform and standardize acceptance testing and philosophy.
Perform and standardize first article testing and philosophy.
Perform and standardize infant mortality (ESS, HALT, etc.) testing and philosophy.
Job Responsibilities Part II
Perform and standardize design verification, engineering developmental testing and philosophy.
Perform and standardize all aspects of environmental qualification (military MIL-STD 810 or commercial equivalent), including tailoring the environmental requirements to meet contract/system needs and hands-on test experience.
Lead in the design of vibration/shock fixtures.
Manage the availability and usage of test instrumentation and equipment (e.g., accelerometers, gyros, data loggers, shaker tables, thermal chambers, EMI/ESD/HEMP equipment, dust/sand, rain, ice, solar) including maintenance of said equipment and purchase of needed equipment.
Perform and standardize EMI/ESD, electromagnetic compatibility testing and philosophy
Perform reliability growth testing, RAM-D testing and philosophy.
Lead the documentation, tracking, and analysis of failure modes, FRACAS, TIRs, 5-Whys, etc.
Lead efforts to standardize an approach to IOT&E, LUTs, and similar validation events to answer the question “Did I build the right system?”
Perform and standardize design of experiments testing and philosophy.
Communicate effectively with the project team, and external customers
Interact/negotiate professionally and persuasively with customers and suppliers
Manage test engineering lab and assets
Work with project management staff to ensure project completion in an efficient manner
Be both results- and process-oriented --- know when structure and discipline are needed to make the necessary progress, and when you need to be flexible and creative and take risks to achieve results
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field with a minimum 8 years of blended experience in systems engineering, verification testing, environmental testing, EMI/EMC testing, and V&V processes and practices.
Excellent analytical, communication (written and verbal), and public speaking skills.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products.
Proficient in the use of later versions of DOORS requirements management software.
Ability to travel occasionally in CONUS, if required, to support testing.
Experience with DoD acquisition, formal reviews, and verification/validation processes preferred
Supervisory and/or management experience a plus.
Understanding of Systems Engineering principles.
