Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary: $77,488 (Step 01) to $100,739 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Research Biologist within the Columbia Research Environmental Center, some of your specific duties will include: Develops vision and leads complex investigations focusing on complex, multidisciplinary ecotoxicology problems, including effects on the biological, chemical, and physical processes of aquatic communities and ecosystems. Serves as primary investigator and project leader of research addressing complex ecotoxicology problems. Designs and conducts ecotoxicology investigations to determine the bioavailability and toxicity of contaminants to endangered, sensitive, or important aquatic organisms, including invertebrate and fish species and communities. Communicates with natural resource managers, identify scientific questions, develop new research initiatives and proposals, and secure funding. Communicate research results effectively in peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations at professional conferences, and with resource managers. Operates a government owned or lease vehicle as an incidental driver. Physical Demands: The work assignments normally involve 90 percent office and 10 percent field effort. The office work is primarily sedentary. Requires some walking, standing, bending, climbing, carrying supplies or equipment and working in labs. The work requires some physical exertion, including wading in water, working in remote areas, walking over wet, muddy, or uneven surfaces, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities. The work requires average agility and dexterity. Occasional lifting and carrying necessary supplies less than 20 pounds may be required. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12: In addition to the basic education requirements described above, applicants must meet one of the following: Possess one year of specialized experience at or equal to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: working independently or as a full member of a research team conceiving, formulating, and conducting research relevant to ecotoxicology, with emphasis on developing new information to meet the needs of resource managers; preparing descriptive scientific reports on the results of research activities for publication and administrative use; authoring or co-authoring publications and other products that contribute to the scientific understanding of the subject; and attending scientific and interagency meetings to present personal research results and exchange information within the scientific community. *OR Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study. *OR Possess a combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.
