The Research Specialist carries out specific research objectives or other projects defined by the Principal Investigator. The duties of the Research Specialist will vary in level of responsibility and complexity depending on the grant project.
Description of Primary Duties
The successful candidate will participate in collecting field data and contribute to the basic natural resources inventory of a park or a monitoring program to assess status and trends of resources conditions. These include, identifying aquatic plant, aquatic invertebrate and fish species observed or collected during monitoring, measuring abundance or condition, environmental parameters, etc., using technical instruments, manuals, protocols, and knowledge of the resources. Data entry using Access database software is an important function of this position. Successful candidates may also be asked to summarize data and contribute to report writing. The Research Specialist may also supervise field technician(s) in the field. Some equipment maintenance and other duties may be assigned as needed. The Research Specialist will receive additional on-the-job training as needed for required activities (e.g., safe boat operation, electrofishing techniques, plant, invertebrate and fish identification and sampling).
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred.
Skills Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Must have the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff, as well as to communicate effectively with off-campus collaborators. Proficiency with basic spreadsheet, graphics, and word processing software is required. Other specific requirements depend upon the particular position. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
