Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Instrument Machine Shop – Machinist I position operates various types of machinery used in the trade. The position requires an ability to fabricate scientific equipment for laboratory use in a timely manner, using various metals, plastics, and other materials required for finished items. Position responsible for the use, operation setup and maintenance of shop machinery, instruments and hand tools in performing projects of various complexities.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operates the milling machine, lathe, drillpress, sander, buffer, bench grinder and various hand tools.
  2. Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and understand verbal instructions.
  3. Customer service skills.
  4. Aids in ordering, receiving and storing material and supplies.
  5. Working knowledge of soldering, brazing, welding and spot welding of various components.
  6. Aids in the overhaul, repairs, modification of parts such as stages, lenses, stepping motors, microscopes and attachments.
  7. Repairs and modifies equipment with instructions from supervisor.
  8. Aids in the designs and fabrication of experimental lab equipment for the particular uses by Washington University labs.
  9. Working knowledge of sheet metal work.
  10. Documentation: Completion of work orders; identify time and material spent on project; provide time and material cost estimate for jobs.
  11. Performs tasks outside of job description in support of the Department and the School’s mission.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent of High School diploma and an Associate’s degree from a Technical College as a Machinist.
  • Minimum 1-3 years work experience with shop math proficiency and strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Position requires a valid Missouri Class E driver’s license or Illinois Class D license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to operate various types of machinery used in the trade such as milling machine, lathe, drill press, sander, buffer, bench grinder and various hand tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and understand verbal instructions.

  • Possess working knowledge of NC equipment, (operating and programming).
  • Possess working knowledge of Cad Cam software.
  • Possess working knowledge of MIG and TIG welding of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum alloys.
  • A candidate needs to possess an openness to learning new skills.
  • The candidate should possess the ability to maintain a good working relationship with staff and customers.
  • The individual must be a self-starter and have good customer service skills with a pleasant demeanor.
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of attention to accuracy and details with the ability to use discretion and good judgment.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $18.80 - $23.99 per hour.

Applicant Special Instructions

  • Must be able to lift and carry tools and material waiting in excess of 50 pounds, and be able to raise and carry with assistance items weighing 200 pounds.
  • Machine shop environment where various equipment is stored and used.
  • Works inside and outside, in dusty and dirty places where temperatures may exceed 100° and equipment may be oily and greasy.
  • Exposure to wet and cold conditions, as well as noise and vibration from operation equipment.
