Essential Functions


Dr. Randall Bateman’s lab investigates the causes, and future diagnosis and treatments of Alzheimer’s disease utilizing a wide variety of assays and techniques from basic applications, such as quantitative measurement of stable-isotope labeled peptides to clinical translational studies in diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. The Bateman Lab is looking for an experienced laboratory manager who can work diligently in a team environment.

This position performs, oversees and coordinates research projects. Oversees entire laboratory setting to promote smooth operations, regulatory compliance and interaction with other laboratories.


  1. With principal investigator, designs, performs and evaluates research procedures. Develops and manages project timelines and aligns across all projects, identifies milestones, identifies and prioritizes project tasks and activities, assigns and manages resources, and ensures project timelines are met.
  2. Develops and implements policies and procedures. Provides comprehensive direction to laboratory personnel. Evaluates and optimizes lab processes and operations, including resolution of issues: mass spectrometer usage, lab equipment usage, assay performance and development, supply and resource management. Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment. Oversees the development and maintenance of lab protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Oversees sample collection, organization, storage, and usage. Manages the Recharge Center for running of mass spectrometry samples including calculation of charged rates, machine usage and time tracking, and invoicing users.
  3. Hires, trains and evaluates the performance of laboratory personnel.
  4. Assists with grant preparation, pre and post-award management. Provides oversight of grant preparation and submission, including collaborating with other investigators within and external to the university to develop research studies, developing plan and timelines for submission, and identifying and assigning grant preparation tasks.
  5. Oversees and directs all support activities of the lab, including human resources, budgets, facility maintenance, purchasing, supplies, materials and equipment.
  6. Assists with data analysis and manuscript preparation. Assists with analysis of research findings, including chart, report and figure generation and quality control processing for data analysis. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses. Writes manuscripts ensuring inclusion of appropriate co-authors, and proper acknowledgement of related grants. Ensures upload to NIHMS system and a generation of a PMCID number.
  7. Researches and recommends new methods and procedures to maintain current capabilities, quality and standards.
  8. Assists with lab data and sample sharing. Responsible for coordinating the receipt and dissemination of samples or data with other institutions and investigators—including international collaborations. Develops, implements, and manages a lab data sharing plan and process, including data request review and approval, execution of material transfer and data sharing agreements with requestors, tracking data transfer and follow-up on data analysis, and ensuring communication of data analysis results (publications, presentations, etc.) per study requirements.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with five years of experience in research lab operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling twelve years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
  • Background or experience in the following areas: biological science and analytical chemistry.
  • Experience with immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometer analysis.
  • Experience in managing aims and goals of large, complex efforts, organizing and executing a variety of projects; should be a results-driven, team leader.
  • Highly skilled in project planning, administration and management with expertise in Gantt charts, resource management.
  • Experience with process and procedure development and optimization.
  • Proven ability to evaluate, troubleshoot and improve a variety of processes.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning and problem solving skills, a critical thinker.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner.
  • Knowledge and application of the scientific method.
  • Excellent scientific writing and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in research design, analysis, and execution, including protocol development, especially in aging and dementia.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of personnel.
  • Expert organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data and familiarity with citation management software.
  • Experience with database management of a large data set, analysis and generation of charts and reports.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $53,830 - $72,675 annually.
