IBM Research summer intern, Cognitive Science (PhD student, summer 2021) in St Louis, Missouri
At IBM, work is more than a job - it's a calling: To build. To design. To code. To consult. To think along with clients and sell. To make markets. To invent. To collaborate. Not just to do something better, but to attempt things you've never thought possible. Are you ready to lead in this new era of technology and solve some of the world's most challenging problems? If so, lets talk.
Your Role and Responsibilities
Do you want to do basic science research in an industry environment? Look no further than IBM Research, where you'll work with scientists from many disciplines who are engaged in a wide variety of different and interesting projects.
In this internship, you will be working on an NIH-funded research project ( https://reporter.nih.gov/project-details/10089378 ) investigating the relationship between spontaneous speech production and cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. In this project, we are collecting spontaneous speech samples (among many other imaging, clinical, genetic, and other biomarkers), and analyzing linguistic characteristics to look for predictive relationships with current cognitive status and future cognitive decline.
You should apply to this internship if some or all of the following sound interesting to you:
-Listening to recorded speech and thinking about what are appropriate linguistic features to measure
-Thinking about individual differences in speech production and how to operationalize and quantify them for analysis
-Investigating what kinds of analyses (both at the feature level and statistically) are appropriate for classifying speech data
-Figuring out what kinds of linguistic features might be relevant for tracking cognitive deficits
-Finding and reading journal articles to understand what approaches (both feature selection and data analysis) have been employed in the past and are appropriate for this dataset
-Willingness and ability to learn how to implement analyses in Praat, Python, or similar
You must have experience with designing experimental studies and collecting human behavioral data (ideally psycholinguistics and/or speech production experiments in particular, though that is not necessary), and testing human participants. In addition, you should have experience working with behavioral data (again, speech production data is a plus but not a necessity) and conducting appropriate statistical analyses. However, prior experience working with older adults or a clinical population is NOT required, and you will not be testing or interacting with participants in this internship (only their data).
Moderate computational experience would be a benefit as well - some programming expertise, some familiarity with computational analyses of language (e.g., NLTK or other NLP techniques). This position does not necessarily require computational modeling experience, but familiarity with conducting automatic speech or text analyses will be a plus.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
Knowledge and hands-on experience with experimental design of human behavioral experiments - 3 yrs
Experience designing and conducting research experiments - 3 yrs
Experience in conducting data analysis and statistical analysis of human behavioral data, particularly speech/language data - 3 yrs
Currently enrolled in a PhD program in a department of Cognitive Science, Psychology, Linguistics, or similar
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
Hand-on research experience in psycholinguistics - 3 yrs
Some experience with computational analysis of language (e.g., NLTK or other NLP techniques)
Programming proficiency (Python preferred)
