Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Department Name/Job Location This position is in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science. This position is for the Medical School Campus. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Research Technician independently performs complex research studies, experiments, and assays. The main focus of this position will be to perform experimental research in virology in a basic research lab that investigates the mechanisms that regulate the establishment and maintenance of latent neuronal infections with herpes simplex virus (HSV). PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs analyses according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians. 2. Performs a variety of molecular biology techniques including PCR, Q-PCR, Western blots, cloning, plasmid preparations, restriction digests, and DNA and RNA isolations. 3. Carries out mammalian cell culture protocols, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization; prepares sterile and nonsterile reagents. Works with bright field and fluorescence microscopes. 4. Conducts small animal procedures, manages animal experiments, and must be available in case experimental animals need tending. 5. Provides for data entry and current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality. 6. Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions. 7. Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures. Required Qualifications Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years. Preferred Qualifications * Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators. * Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports. * Willingness to work and train with students. * Ability to work as part of a team to create a collaborative environment. * Extensive experience handling small rodents and some general colony management. * Experience with mammalian cell culture, fluorescent microscopy, and basic virology concepts and techniques. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $17.00 - $22.96 per hour.
