Essential Functions


The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine has an opening for a Senior Research Technician in the Division of Cancer Biology. The laboratory projects will involve a wide range of collaborative work on molecular biology, histopathology, in vitro assays, gene expression and next generation sequencing analysis, in vivo mouse model studies, live cell imaging, and analysis of patient tumor specimens. This position independently performs complex research studies, experiments and assays. Expected to interpret data and to generate figures to be used in manuscripts and grant applications. After a period of training, will also be expected to present data at lab meetings and group research meetings.

Current projects:

  • Role of SERPINB3 in radiation response and recurrence in cervical cancer and other solid tumors.
  • Role of lysosome in radiation-induced death.
  • Molecular mechanisms of tumor immunity in radiation resistant tumors.


  1. Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians.
  2. Provides for data entry and current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality.
  3. May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
  4. Performs cell culture, Western blots, cloning, DNA/RNA isolation, molecular techniques, etc.
  5. Performs studies with animals and performs in vitro studies, such as cell proliferation assays, apoptosis, etc.
  6. Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  7. Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  8. Assists in the training and development of technicians, acting as a group leader.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least three years of post-bachelor's experience in molecular biology, immunology or a related field.
  • Experience in molecular biology, immunology or a related field.
  • Experience with small animal models (mice), as well as molecular biology techniques. Techniques include: murine xenograft and orthotopic tumor models, DNA cloning, ELISA, flow cytometry, Western Blot, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and live cell confocal microscopy.
  • Expertise in cancer biology and/or host and tumor immunology are considered a strength, but training will be provided as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate in a collaborative manner with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $17.00 - $22.96 per hour.
