Act as a Sensory Scientist on project teams. Consult, design and manage appropriate descriptive, discrimination and consumer guidance tests to enhance product knowledge and report findings in context of project objectives/business goals. Participate in Descriptive Panel Training and Company-wide Sensory Training as needed. Monitor Panelist performance through designed experiments and appropriate stats analysis. Provide professional guidance and enable project leaders to define and progress towards measurable sensory targets. Allocate sensory testing resources in accord with company priorities. Develop new methods to gain product understanding.

The objective is to further knowledge in the basic science and/or development of new and better products, processes, and/or ideas. Some scientists engage in basic research and others in product or applications development. Differences in levels relate examining more complex experiments and degree of independent judgment/action allowed in designing experiments, ensuring data quality and formulating conclusions.

The responsibilities of this position include:

  1. Serve as sensory technical consultant/coordinator on assigned project teams.Assist team members in the development of program research objectives, and business impact.Define sensory objectives and recommend testing strategy to support program objectives.Attend team meetings; regularly review progress and plans.

  2. Work with sensory staff and descriptive panelists to carry out appropriate sensory tests to industry standards. Develop and recommend new test methodologies to incorporate where needed to improve product understanding.Analyze sensory data and write comprehensive reports for project leaders detailing results and conclusions.Communication of results and interpretation to project leader verbally or in writing.Design experiments and apply statistical analysis to monitor panelist performance.Recommend panelist training where needed to ensure accuracy/precision.

  3. Provide professional guidance to staff to improve research skills and increase their understanding of techniques and procedures utilized; may instruct personnel in more advanced aspects of research/ data interpretation.Provide sensory consultancy where needed in dealing with customers and co-suppliers.

  4. Assist in management of sensory facility to ensure a safe environment is maintained, efficient use of staff time, financial resources.

Qualifications

The following are required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological, Chemical, Food Science, Sensory Science or related field.

  • 5 years Bachelors Degree in related field with five (5) years of closely related experience.

  • Master’s Degree in Biological, Chemical, Food Science or related field with four (4) years of experience.

  • Master’s Degree in Biological, Chemical, Food Science or related field with three (3) year of experience.

  • Ph.D. with no experience in related field.

  • Experience in training and maintaining a sensory profiling panel and industry standard consumer testing methodologies, statistical analysis of sensory data and associated data from other sources.

  • Experience in sensory analysis of food materials is essential; experience in applied statistics, analytical chemistry, method development and product development are desirable.

  • Experience in successfully managing collaborative relationships at work e.g. between functions, with customers or co-suppliers would be an advantage.

Desired:

Masters Degree or BS plus 7-10 years in Sensory with proven track record and strong applied statistics knowledge and experience.
