Assists in the installation, repair and maintenance of various railroad signals and grade crossing devices.
Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Inspects and tests signal circuitry, equipment, and systems for problems and defects.
Constructs forms and foundations for signal equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Installs signal/communication structures and components.
Lubricates moving parts on mechanical equipment such as switch machines and controllers.
Builds and dismantles signal crossing warning device equipment.
Troubleshoots and fixes malfunctions.
Maintains, repairs, and replace signal communication circuitry, systems, and components.
Understands and follows company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures.
General/Other Responsibilities and Duties
Records and reports information about mileage or track inspected, repairs performed, and equipment requiring replacement.
Assists others with their work.
Sets up barricades to isolate potentially dangerous situations.
Prepares and paints signal equipment.
Cleans and maintains work areas.
Required Skills and Qualifications
A minimum of 3 years of experience in railroad signal construction work.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations to solve practical problems.
Ability to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text.
Ability to effectively and accurately understand, interpret, reference, evaluate, organize, and record non-technical and technical information.
Ability to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.
Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Works outdoors at construction sites.
Works with and around moving machines, vehicles, and equipment.
Performs heavy physical labor; may lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing up to75pounds.
Climbs poles, ladders and large structures and maintains balance while working on equipment.
Stands and walks on uneven terrain; bends, stoops and kneels.
Occasionally works at elevated heights.
May occasionally work in confined spaces.
Exposed to harsh weather conditions including extremely hot and extremely cold weather.
Exposed to loud noise.
Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection as required by the company.
